Meet Terri and Joe Arbuckle!Being outdoor enthusiasts, we were youth high adventure advisors for 17 years. Now that our sons have families of their own, we decided to share our passion for the outdoors with other adventurers. We specialize in hosting daily, evening, weekend, and weekly kayak tours and mountain bike rides in the North State.

Headwaters Adventure Company
The Story of How We Came To Be
Given a choice in life, which would you prefer—to surround yourself with happy people enjoying an outdoor activity and looking forward to the opportunities presented? Or to sit behind a desk and fend off the negative energy of the unhappy people you encounter? This was a question we recognized while traveling through Denali National Park in Alaska. Everyone on the excursion was excited at every turn with every new adventure—even in the face of danger and the unknown of the Alaskan Wilderness. It was then we knew we wanted to host outdoor adventures as a business. It just took a few years to find the right opportunity.
We have always been avid outdoor enthusiasts. For 17 years, we provided high adventure programs through the Boy Scouts of America Explorers and Venturing programs. We were also instrumental in the foundation and operation of a high adventure base camp offering a multitude of activities where we both were recognized with highest honors for our involvement. Our love for outdoor adventures and the friendships established during these adventures has prepared us for the next venture: Headwaters Adventure Company.
There are a lot of people who enjoy outdoor adventures, but don’t have the time or area knowledge to research and plan excursions and don't have the necessary equipment to participate in adventures. There are also many people who lead sheltered lives and are not yet experienced in outdoor adventures, but want to engage in new experiences. We're a great fit—we can share our knowledge, extend our enthusiasm, and motivate people to step outside their comfort level, try something new and exciting, and invest in their health. In exchange, we get to have fun while being surrounded by happy people.
Shasta County and the surrounding areas have so much to offer in outdoor activities; we have focused on a few to start our company. With the Pacific Coast only 2.5 hours away, with all the pristine lakes in the area, and with the need to combat the summer heat, kayaking was a likely choice. We offer weekly hosted kayak excursions on local lakes and cap them off with a freshly prepared, hot Dutch oven dessert when participants come off the water. We do not charge a fee for these hosted kayak outings; we do, however, offer touring kayak rentals, which we deliver to the lake for our guests who rent them.
We also host regular “Introduction to Kayaking” sessions where participants are coached on the basic fundamentals of kayaking—again at no cost. Touring kayak rentals are available. As the demand arises, we offer “Kayaking Skills Clinics”, which are coached by certified instructors for a nominal fee. The group size for these clinics is kept extremely small to provide optimum training to the participants.
We are probably best known for our hospitality. We host kayak excursions throughout the North State and plan to expand these excursions to regional expeditions as our clientele grows.
The cycling community is alive and well in the North State. With the extensive trail system throughout Shasta County and the neighboring areas, cycling is a natural fit for Headwaters. Each March, we conduct an “Introduction to Mountain Biking” course in conjunction with the Redding Mountain Bike Club. This six-week course is designed to help individuals get out and enjoy the riding opportunities in our area. The course focuses on basic bike skills and builds up each individual’s endurance and comfort level.
